1. Bronze ritual vessel (chüeh)
- Shang dynasty - 12th-11th century B.C. Bronze ritual vessel (chüeh), on three spreading legs of triangular section, with the lip extending to a sharp point on either side of the simple loop-handle surmounted by an animal head. The ridged cover has a loop-handle at the centre. Decorated with t'ao-t'ieh masks on body and cover, and with a band of squared spirals at the bottom of the body decoration. Three short vertical flanges interrupt the design on the body, and on the side opposite the handle is a small animal mask in high relief, not visible in the stereo-photograph. Under the handle is a cicada and on the inner wall is an inscription, which is repeated on the inside of the cover (height 22,4 cm). |
2. Bronze ritual vessel (chüeh)
- Shang dynasty - 11th century B.C. Bronze ritual vessel (chüeh), on three spreading triangular section legs, with bulbous body fitted with a loop-handle on one side, two wide-spreading spouts, two vertical pillars attached to the sides of the spout and fitted with spindle-shaped caps and cover with a loop-handle at the centre. Decorated round the body with complex 'T' design on a squared spiral (lei-wen) ground, with a narrow band of t'ao-t'ieh masks round the constricted neck, and, on the cover complex 'T' design in the centre and with a horned bovine head at either end (height 22,5 cm). |
3. Bronze ritual vessel (fang-i)
- Shang dynasty - 12th-11th century B.C. Bronze ritual vessel (fang-i), fitted with a roof-like cover, surmounted by a knob of similar form, decorated on the body, on each face with a large t'ao-t'ieh mask motive, with a narrow band of k'uei dragons above and below; the foot being notched. Serrated flanges at the corner. The cover, also with serrated flanges, is decorated with similar t'ao-t'ieh to those on the body, but inverted (height 19,1). |
4. Bronze ritual vessel (fang-i)
- Shang dynasty - 12th-11th century B.C. Bronze ritual vessel (fang-i), with hipped roof-like cover. On each face of the rectangular body the dominant decoration is a t'ao-t'ieh mask, with narrow bands of k'uei dragons above and below; t'ao-t'ieh masks appear inverted on each surface of the cover. The main elements of the design are ornamented with bold spirals against a squared spiral (lei-wen) ground. Serrated flanges at each corner and down the centre of each side; the foot is notched on each side. Inside both vessel and cover is an inscription of a bird carrying a dagger-axe on its head, the meaning of which is unknown. Inside the cover is a cicada in relief (height 30,0 cm). |
5. Bronze ritual vessel (fang-i)
- From Lo-yang, Early Chou dynasty - 11th-10th century B.C. Bronze ritual vessel (fang-i), with hipped roof-like cover surmounted by a knob of similar form, with three bands of decoration on each side, consisting of a central band of florid t'ao-t'ieh masks, with a narrow band of birds above and of k'uei dragons below. On the cover the t'ao-t'ieh are repeated in an inverted position, with birds above. The t'ao-t'ieh is repeated on each face of the knob. There are vertical segmented flanges at each angle of the body and down the centre of each side, and simple vertical flanges at the corners of the cover and down the centre of each face; small flanges also appear on the knob. The vessel is inscribed (height 26,0 cm). |
6. Bronze ritual vessel (i)
- Chou dynasty - 8th-7th century B.C. Bronze ritual vessel (i), standing on four feet in the form of coiled k'uei dragons. The body, of oval section with a wide spout, is broadly fluted horizontally and has a band of interlaced k'uei dragons round the rim. A dragon-head handle, with crest in high relief is fitted at the back. Inside is an inscription of 20 characters (lenght 36,5 cm). |
7. Bronze ritual vessel (li-ho)
- Shang dynasty - 15th-13th century B.C. Bronze ritual vessel (li-ho), with three hollow udder-like legs, simple loop-handle and straight spout, and a domed top with circular aperture, decorated with a band of t'ao-t'ieh motives round the body and with a human mask on the domed top (height 25,4 cm). |
