1. Neolithic earthenware jar - Yang-shao culture from Kansu, Pan-shan type - Neolithic period

Globular jar with tapering body, short spreading neck and two loop side-handles at the point of greatest width, of buff earthenware, painted in unfired black and dark reddish brown pigments with five continuous spirals, at the centre of each of which is a cowrie-shell motive. The black lines have serrated edges (height 35,8 cm).

2. Neolithic earthenware jar - Yang-shao culture from Kansu, Pan-shan type - Neolithic period

Globular jar with short cylindrical neck and spreading lip, with two loop side-handles, of buff earthenware, painted in unfired black and dark maroon pigments with spiral band designs enclosing circular 'chess-board' medallions (height 39,5 cm).

3. Neolithic earthenware jar - Yang-shao culture from Kansu, Pan-shan type - Neolithic period

Globular jar with tapering foot, two loop side-handles and a short expanding neck, of pale buff earthenware, painted in unfired purplish black pigment with a checker-board design, with crescents and serrated bands. Cross hatching on the neck and a band of arcs inside the lip (height 32,0 cm).

Globular jar with two cylindrical narrow necks and two loop side-handles, of buff earthenware, painted in unfired black and dark maroon pigments with bands of decoration with serrated edges (height 23,7 cm).

5. Neolithic earthenware jar - Yang-shao culture from Kansu, Pan-shan type - Neolithic period

Jar of depressed globular shape with wide mouth, encircled by thirteen vertical lugs pierced with small holes and having black painted serrations on the upper edge. Buff earthenware painted in unfired black pigment with horizontal bands (height 10,2 cm).

6. Earthenware figure of a human head on a spreading foot - Yang-shao culture from Kansu, Pan-shan type - Neolithic period

Figure of a human head, with spreading serrated foot, possibly the cover of a vessel, of buff earthenware, painted in unfired black and dark maroon pigments with bands of simple linear decoration. It is possible that this may have been intended as a cover for vessels of the type represented in the previous illustration (Reel 1 Picture 5), the serrations between the vertical lugs (height 15,0 cm).

7. Earthenware figure of a human head on a spreading foot - Yang-shao culture from Kansu, Pan-shan type - Neolithic period

Figure of a human head, with spreading serrated foot, possibly the cover of a vessel, of buff earthenware, painted in unfired black and dark maroon pigments. On the back of the head is a snake, whose head can just be seen in the stereo-photograph (height 12,7 cm).
